Smith became the first wide receiver to be named AP Player of the Year since the award’s inception in 1998. Smith won the 2020 Heisman Trophy over finalists Kyle Trask, Trevor Lawrence, and teammate Mac Jones, becoming the first wide receiver to win the award since Desmond Howard in 1991 and only the fourth overall.
Several days later, against Ohio State in the CFP National Championship Game, Smith set records for title game catches (12) and touchdown receptions (3), while also totaling 215 yards despite leaving early in the third quarter with a hand injury. Alabama won the championship game 52-24, they’re sixth in 12 years, and Smith was named Offensive MVP. Smith set more than seven school receiving records while playing for Alabama. Smith accepted an invitation to the 2021 Senior Bowl but did not participate. His teammates at Alabama dubbed him the “Slim Reaper” because of his small stature and athletic ability.
